About the Event
English stained glass is rich and diverse, and one area historians have frequently overlooked is the contribution of the work by Victorian women amateurs between 1830 – 1880.
Who were these people, what is an amateur anyway, and what were the networks of amateurs and the relationships they adopted with the professional studios?
First, we will recognize the significance and aesthetic of this amateur stained glass. Secondly, we will discuss how conservators should preserve these niche windows which were created by a group of fascinating artisans. Being ignored for far too long and rediscovering this lost heritage, let’s take a close look.
Our presenter, Tom Küpper, has been involved in stained glass since the late 1980’s, and for 25 years he worked at Lincoln Cathedral as glazier and conservator, and later as Head of Department. Tom is currently Estates and Facilities Manager at Peterborough Cathedral. Tom gained his Post Graduate Diploma in the “Conservation of Historic Objects” from DeMontfort University, Leicester in 2004 and his Master of Arts (MA) in the same subject in 2005.
Tom has been an ICON Accredited Conservator-Restorer (ACR) since 2011, and has recently successfully completed his PhD researching Stained Glass Windows Made by Women Amateurs in English Churches from 1830 - 1880.
