Melissa has been working professionally with glass since graduating from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1993, where she studied drawing and illustration. Serendipity brought her to the art glass world, and she has been unendingly captivated ever since. She has worked in most all aspects of the craft in both Milwaukee and Chicago; with private commissions, participating in art fairs and gallery shows, working for several small local specialty studios, and large national full service studios. She has learned greatly from the strong traditions of architectural arts and fine craftsmanship in abundance around her. She credits the European artisans who brought their knowledge to the industrial Midwest as a source of strength; the source of inspiration comes from fellow artists she has been fortunate to study glass painting alongside.
Glass painting has been a commitment and passion throughout. Since 2005 this has been her main full time focus; as production painter at Conrad Schmitt Studios in Milwaukee, WI and since 2014 as art department manager at Willet Hauser in Winona, MN.
She is immensely dedicated to carry the torch of the incredible artists that have come before her in this great legacy, and yet is endlessly inspired by the creativity of new ideas that continue. Always, in every capacity, she says, there is this: the simple joy of light, color, movement, texture, line.
