A native to Medina, Ohio, Janet received her BA Degree from Miami University in Anthropology with a minor degree in Environmental Science Education, as well as attended coursework at Mount Carroll Center for Historic Preservation Studies. Janet was a business owner and operator for over 15 years of a nationally franchised restaurant and an accident reconstruction consulting firm.
Janet was Executive Director for over eleven years, and member for over twenty-two years, of the Medina Community Design Committee, a nonprofit, historic preservation organization that offers input and assistance to the community regarding restoration, preservation, signage and design and educational programs. During her tenure, Janet: directed the move and restoration of a nationally registered historic house to become the offices and resource center for the organization; consulted with hundreds of clients on the restoration and preservation of historic buildings; co-authored an historic inventory of over 150 buildings in Medina as part of a state funded preservation study; instituted fundraising programs for the organization and created a lending library, various publications, video productions for public television and educational programs in local history.
Janet met Jim Whitney, founder of Whitney Stained Glass Studio, while consulting on the same historic church in Medina. The opportunity arose for Janet to apprentice with this incredible mentor until Jim’s passing in 2005. She is currently General Operations Director for Whitney Stained Glass Studio and involved in all aspects of stained glass restoration and fabrication as well as business operation.
Janet has been the recipient of various awards of achievement and recognition from such organizations as: The Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums, Kiwanis, and Chamber of Commerce. She has received the Public Education & Awareness Award from the Ohio Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio Historical Society and the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award. She has been a member of numerous organizations including: Board Member and treasurer of the Medina Summit Land Conservancy, Commissioner of the Medina City Archives Commission, member of: the Cleveland Restoration Society, Downtown Ohio, the Ohio Historical Society, the Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums, the American Association for State & Local History, the American Museum Association, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Janet is also a licensed massage therapist with an Associates Degree in Masseotherapy, with a focus of working on cancer and quadriplegic patients, as well as being a certified diver in Advanced Open Water Diving and Nitrox Diving.
